THE BELTED PLAID or GREAT KILT

This garment although worn up to the early part of the 19th century is most representitive of the 1600's.  Not truly a kilt, it is more properly referred to as the belted plaid or fela mor.

It was given the name "Great Kilt" sometime during the 18th century in order to differentiate it from the 'little' kilt which was being worn at the same time.

It is a 5 yard X 60" piece of tartan, hemmed on two ends, that the wearer folds in a special way in order to put the garment on.  It is then secured in place with the wearers belt.

(We provide wearing instructions with each purchase).
Don't get caught up in the 9 yard kilt theory which is an unsupported myth.  I have found that 5 yards is enough for most.  6 yards will take care of everyone else.

Pictured above and to the left is Angus's son, Gaelen in a 5 yard belted plaid. Above right is the same 5 yard belted plaid on more 'muscular' gentlemen.
